This is the
Colorado woman who had her unborn child ripped from her womb after she
was attacked as she responded to a stranger's Craigslist ad for baby
clothes.
Michelle
Wilkins, 26, is in a critical but stable condition in hospital and is
trying to cope with the 'unimaginable sorrow' of losing her child in
such a horrific way, her family said on Thursday night.
The
baby died after suspect Dynel Catrece Lane, 34, took it to the hospital
and told a staffer she had had a miscarriage, according to
authorities.
Murder
charges against Lane now depend on whether the child was alive outside
of the 26-year-old expectant mother's womb, the district attorney's
office said on Thursday.
An autopsy for the baby has been scheduled for Friday.
Lane allegedly lured Watkins to her Longmont home on Wednesday using the Craigslist ad.
Watkins
arrived at the home shortly before midday. She was stabbed in the neck
with a broken glass, cut open and had her baby pulled from her abdomen
in the attack.
A knife with a 3-inch blade was found at the scene, according to CNN.
Meanwhile, Wilkins managed to call 911 while she lay bleeding heavily in the basement of the cul-de-sac home.
During
the desperate six-minute call, she faintly told the dispatcher: 'She
cut me in the stomach... I'm pregnant... I'm bleeding out.'
The woman was able to give the dispatcher the address, adding that she was in the basement and had locked the door.
She had multiple wounds, Wilkins said, and the attacker broke a glass and stabbed her in the neck as she was trying to leave.
Wilkins
was rescued by emergency responders who heard her calling for help. She
was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery and survived.
Lane
was facing charges of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree
assault, and child abuse knowingly and recklessly resulting in death,
the Boulder District Attorney's Office confirmed on Thursday.
