Millions of Londoners were today preparing to be plunged into rush hour darkness due to a near-total eclipse of the sun.
But forecasters warned they could be left with a disappointing view due to cloudy weather conditions in the south-east for the celestial show as the moon moves in front of the sun from around 8.30am.
But forecasters warned they could be left with a disappointing view due to cloudy weather conditions in the south-east for the celestial show as the moon moves in front of the sun from around 8.30am.
It is expected the best views of the eclipse - during which the moon will cover up to 97 per cent of the sun's surface - will be available in the Midlands and parts of south-west England, as well as north-east Scotland.
Met Office forecaster Kate Brown said Londoners could miss out on the best views.
She said: "The south-east corner is currently overcast and is going to stay that way into the time of the eclipse.
"But even if people don't see it happening they will still be able to sense it getting darker during that time."
