Abba
Last Tuesday, the Police Council at a meeting with President Goodluck
Jonathan, confirmed the acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Suleiman
Abba as the substantive Inspector General of Police.
Abba, a fine gentleman was appointed in acting capacity late July.
The confirmation of his appointment is coming on the heels of the IG’s interpretationof the defection of the Speaker of the House, Hon AminuTambuwal, leading to the withdrawal of his security apparatchik last week.

Many had accused the IG of undertaking an illegal action since it is not his place to interpret the law, but to enforce it.
His action is seen as usurping the functions of the judiciary and a subtle but wrong way of pleasing his boss, Mr President. Those who believe Abba withdrew Tambuwal’s security to express President Jonathan’s pain at Tambuwal’s defection, at such a crucial time, argue that the confirmation of Abba is a reward for his latest “initiative”. The timing of the confirmation strikes more than mere coincidence with the action against the Speaker.

It is like saying, Abba has convinced us that he can be “loyal”, so get him confirmed.
While in theory, the IG is supposed to be apolitical and non-partisan, the truth is that the truism in the saying that he who pays the piper dictates the tune, verily applies here. To argue that the IG is being paid by the tax payers’ money and not President Jonathan’s personal resources, is to merely push a banal argument that does not connect with reality.

But therein lies our worry. As the 2015 elections beckon, will the
police, under Abba truly remain apolitical and above board? The question
is pertinent because in such previous elections, we have seen the
police and indeed, other law enforcement agencies becoming agents of
electoral fraud either in directly participating in electoral
malpractices to favour their overall principal or looking the other way
when crooked politicians and their thugs subvert the system to suit
pre-arranged ends.
We will watch Abbas’s actions and body language in the months ahead. But I must not fail to congratulate the chief cop of the nation on his confirmation.
